My time in Mexico was great. The work was hard, but one of my favorite parts was the fruit break in the middle. The people were very nice and I made some great friends. We got to take Wednesday off because we got twice as much done on Monday than they expected. On Wednesday, which was my 16th birthday, we got to sleep in till 7 and we went to the beach. On Thursday we finished up the roof after waking up at 5am again. This trip has been a great experience for me. I especially loved making new friends and deepening friendships with others.

The hardest part about the Mexico Mission trip is the Work. It was hard and fun at the same time, it was a mystery on what you were going to do next. The work was never ending, if you finished they would find something for you to do until it was time to stop working. During the trip you get to meet many new people, have new experiences, and take in a new culture. During the trip you get to do many things you either get to go to the beach, cenote, and ancient ruins. The best part of the trip was going to the cenote, it felt nice to cool down after working and staying out in the sun all day. The Mexico Mission trip was one of the best things I have ever done, I feel like I have made a difference.

My favorite part about the trip would be the work, beach, and the cenotes. The work was very fun even though it took us little while to finish the work, you could communicate with the different people. The beach was very fun seeing all of the interesting shells with crabs in them. It was very exciting jumping from 20ft high, and swinging on the rope swing right into the cenote.

Micah Brooks -VBS on the 2nd day

Today at VBS we had lots of fun helping the kids learn about Jesus. First, Stephen Mustard read a story from the Jesus StoryBook Bible to the kids. His Spanish pronunciations were on point. The story was about when Jesus calmed the storm on a boat with his disciples. After the story the kids all got a snack and juice box. Once they received their snacks they all ventured out to explore the many stations. Said stations consisted of Jewelry making, coloring pages, chalk, bubbles, and recreation. I helped in recreation and had a blast playing with the kids. A one point a kid threw a beach ball at me and showed me that he wanted me to try and hit him with it as well. This created a game of “tag“ that slowly expanded into a semi-controlled organized chaos that including about fifteen local kids and three team members. The whole team had a blast at the VBS.

Jake Doster - Work day so far

As a first year attendee I was very impressed with all of the work we’re doing. I have never been on a mission trip before so I had no idea what to expect while on the work site. The work we did was exhausting but it felt really good to know that what we did was great work and that it would leave a lasting impression. All of us feel the same knowing that we’re doing good for the community and we’re working hard to the point where the team is finishing the work early. Today the team put cement floors in 4 classrooms. We worked so hard that we finished two and a half hours ahead of schedule. Due to the fact that we finished early, the team was also able to move rocks and dirt to level out the space where a staircase will go in the future.

Work Day Numero Uno

We are all going to sleep well tonight.

We woke up at 5 am, ate at 5:30 and took our hour trip to the village where we are working on getting a concrete roof and floor laid for 4 different rooms of Saini Church. The plan was for us to get the concrete slabs and concrete blocks laid for the two of the roofs, we laid all four. I think to say we killed it is an understatement. Everyone pulled their weight, worked with everything we could muster and there were some of us who were forced to take breaks. During our time there were some falls, but no one was seriously hurt, thankfully. Once, while I, Hope, was helping Stephen Mustard move one of the concrete slabs into position to pick up, my foot got caught under the slab and I went down. I knew I was falling and I just let myself fall. I have fallen enough in my life where I have learned to do it as graceful as one can while falling, therefore I laid there for a moment laughing at myself, let everyone know I was okay and then popped right back up. I am pretty sure I ended up with the most boo-boos by the end of the day, but again, that doesn’t surprise me since I tend to be a bull in a China shop most of the time.

Our next accident came when Carter Brooks tried to assist in moving a slab into position and he was not able to keep up. Before we knew it, it moved past him nearly taking is curly head off, and thankful, he was able to quickly move out of the way. Don’t worry, Kelly, your son will come back with himself in tact! Steven and Emily quickly ran to check on him and later in the day Emily checked on him again to make sure he was doing fine. The funniest accident that happened was when poor Benjamin Milner’s feet went flying in the air, but no worries, he too was unharmed. The slab was in the middle of being picked up to hand up to the guys on the roof and Ben was not quit ready. His feet went flying, but he was quick like Carter where he was able to catch himself and walked away unharmed.

Our next task was moving concrete bricks on an assembly line from a large stack to the roof. For each roof we needed 140!!! We moved and the locals on the roof laid 560 concrete bricks in roughly 2 and 1/2 hours! I don’t know about you, but I am impressed with all of us! Every single person was doing something rather it was moving the bricks, making sure everyone was well hydrated or taking time to rest (which was very important). By the time it was time for lunch we were all dripping with sweat and exhausted. I am typically not a sandwich person and to be honest, I am not sure what meat was on it, but I ate two of them. There were some of us who ate 3, before I could finish my 2, and he knows who he is!

We rested for about an hour and then hosted VBS for the local kids. I am going to let the next blogger talk about that, because I did more of walking around taking pictures and making sure everyone was well hydrated and taken care of.

I wish you could have witness how fast and efficient we all moved together. Benjamin and Carter jumped in and worked as hard as they could. I am pretty sure my entire body will be hurting in the morning or at least my arms are going to fall off, but it is worth it. Since we were only expected to finish two rooms today, we have had to change out schedule around and will start laying the concrete tomorrow for the floors! If anyone is honest we are not looking forward to it, however, we will get up and doing it!

We are at Sarah’s Casa right now getting ready to eat some well deserved pizza! Then we are looking forward to getting back to Shalom and taking some nice cool showers. I am going to go now, because the Pizza is being served and if I am not careful, the starving young men on this trip will destroy the pizza! But again, it is well deserved!

(I am not sure how to airdrop pictures to Steven’t computer at the moment so we will add picture on the next post!)

1st Day In Mexico

Today we woke up and went down to breakfast where we had the best ham and cheese breakfast quesadillas. After we drove downtown, where we got to see all of the fun shops and market stands. We shopped until around 11 when we came back to Shalom for church. The sermon was about mistreatment and abuse, and although we could not understand much, it was an amazing experience as always. Next we had lunch and then our siesta time to rest before our group meeting to go through our devotional for the day. Finally we went to Blas Pascal, the school, where we played ultimate frisbee, soccer, and swam in a pool for hours. Eventually we went out to eat and then came home to shower and sleep before our big day tomorrow. (We have to be up at 5a.m. to drive to the sight.) It has been so so amazing getting to reconnect with all of the people here and I loved getting to play soccer with some of the local church members and catch up with old friends that we haven't been able to see for so long. Only day one but already incredible and memorable and I’m so excited for the rest of the week.
