When Kids Tease

Teasing is one of those things that probably affects your family no matter what age your kids are. There are times when it feels like it comes second nature to my kids. And honestly, sometimes to me also. It is so easy to do damage to people we love in the name of getting a laugh out of people. It can be easy to let it go as something everyone does but its important we help our kids see how we can hurt people we love with our words- even when they say just kidding after. I like the way she talks about addressing this with our kids. Although I probably wouldn’t use the story of Elisha in correcting my kids [I’m not sure fear is a great motivator] unless it’s to show the grace of God to us that he doesn’t give us what we deserve when we tear down people made in his image.

Get Your Kids Ready for Church in 5, 15, or 30 Minutes

It is easy to get frustrated with our kids, and even ourselves, when things don’t go right at church. They are distracted. We are unfocused. And it almost feels like more work than it’s worth. Well first, I want to encourage you that it IS worth it! Our kids learn so much even from the habit of going to church and seeing us struggle through those mornings. We communicate the importance of God and of meeting with his people. They need this every Sunday. But sometimes we also miss opportunities to prepare our families and set our kids up for success before we arrive on Sunday morning. Even a little bit of prep time can go a long way towards turning their hearts and minds towards Jesus for the worship service. I love how she gives ideas for your family, no matter how rushed you are. And she is right about Scripture- Faith Weekly always has the Scripture for Sunday morning listed so you can read it with your family on Saturday night to prepare [thanks Elise!].

VIDEO: Paul Tripp on How to Talk to Your Child About God

Dads, there is so much for us to think about in terms of what we have to do and what we want to pass on to our kids. It can be overwhelming to think of the responsibility we have and to feel like there will never be enough time to pass on all the things we want to give to our kids. This video and article remind us of 2 things we must focus on because they are rooted in what Jesus described as the 2 greatest commandments- Loving God and Loving Our Neighbor. Teaching our kids how to glorify God and love others are things we don’t want them to leave our house without. These are some helpful thoughts about it. And a reminder of the goodness and grace of God towards us and our kids in the face of all our inevitable shortcomings.

VIDEO: Worth Watching with Your Kids

Towards the end of the regular season, the biggest story in sports was the injury to Damar Hamlin during an NFL game that saw EMS workers revive him on the field and then transport him to the hospital. The game was cancelled and both players and others around the sports world were left to grip with the reality of our frailty. Of our humanness. This video shows the way people apart from Jesus are forced to cope with the reality of life without God when these moments happen. It gives us a glimpse of how God is at work even in those tragic moments. It can be a great conversation starter with your kids about how to think and talk about these things for them and with their friends.

Keeping Up with the Jones’: The Temptation to Compare

“Is my kid better behaved than theirs?” “Does my teenager have more college opportunities than theirs?” “What do other people think about my parenting when they see my kids?” It can be a huge challenge to keep from comparing our kids and our families with others. And yet the envy and regret that builds from that comparison can drive us to a constant state of not-enoughness that keeps us from resting in who we are because of Jesus. What can give us the ability to take our eyes off of everyone else, and keep them on Jesus? This article is a needed reminder that our identity as parents, and our hope for our kids, rests in Jesus.

I’m Sorry Silas

I don’t know why it feels so hard sometimes- to say “I’m sorry” to my kids. It should not be that difficult but I still feel myself hesitating sometimes. And yet, over and over again, it proves to be one of the most powerful things a parent can do to display the gospel for their kids. While it shapes our own hearts, it also gives kids a picture of what it looks like to be in need of the mercy and grace of Jesus. This article is a good reminder of this. When was the last time you apologized to one of your kids and asked for their forgiveness?

PODCAST: 7 Traits of Effective Parenting with Dr. Danny Huerta

I was not familiar with Dr. Danny Huerta before this podcast but I really enjoyed what he has to say. He talks a lot about the importance with our connecting with our kids and how to do that. He talks about respect in the parent/child relationship. And a lot more. This 40 minute interview is well worth the time.

Click Here for the podcast in iTunes or

VIDEO: Great example of an apology

This 3 minute video is a great example of a public apology. It is the opposite of what we often see and hear from celebrities when they make a mistake. It is so rare for our kids to hear someone take complete responsibility for their actions, not shift blame to someone else, and acknowledge the people they have hurt. I also love that he says, “I’m not going to say this wasn’t me because it was” the exact opposite of what most people say. Watch this video with your kids and see if they can spot the things that make it a good apology. Talk about the importance of acknowledging our sin and restoring our relationships with others through asking for forgiveness.

VIDEO: “How to respond to disrespect”

Self control is something that so many of our kids struggle with. It is a fruit of the Spirit and something I pray for my kids often. I really like the way, in this video, he explains to the boys what to do when someone insults them or wrongs them. It’s just a few minutes but it could be a great conversation starter with your kids about what to do the next time someone teases them or pushes their buttons.

12-15-22 Great Book Ideas for Christmas!

Merry Christmas! I hope this season has provided many opportunities to spend time together as a family and talk about Jesus together. For those with middle and high school students, I realize the stress of exams means the best of that time won’t start until after tomorrow. But I pray that your kids would experience the peace of Jesus as they navigate the anxiety and pressure of testing. It’s not easy for them- or their parents!

With 10 days left until Christmas, you may have a lot of your shopping already done. But I wanted to send out some last minute Christmas ideas for your kids and your family. This is a list of Bibles, Bible studies, devotionals and books that can help you encourage your family in their walk with Jesus, and help kids grow on their own.

I could always list more books so let me know if you have any questions or are looking for a specific type of book. Besides Amazon, www.newgrowthpress.com, www.thegoodbook.com, and www.10ofthose.com are great places to find a lot of these titles and still get them by Christmas [they have some great sales going on as well].

BIBLES

  • New Living Translation [NLT]- This version is a little easier for young kids who are reading the Bible on their own for the first time.

  • English Standard Version [ESV]- This is the version we use in church and can make it easier for kids to follow along with Pastor Nathan as he preaches.

  • ESV Holy Bible for Kids [Elementary]

  • ESV Student Study Bible [Middle & High School]

STORYBOOK BIBLES

  • The Beginner’s Gospel Story Bible by Jared Kennedy [Preschool]- This is a great first Bible to read simple stories to your kids.

  • Bible Stories Every Kid Should Know by Kenneth Taylor [Elementary]- This is the Bible I am reading with Randy right now. It has questions after each story and he has enjoyed it.

  • The Gospel Story Bible by Marty Machowski [Elementary]- This is the Bible our kids’ Sunday school curriculum is based on so they will recognize the stories. It has questions at the end of each story which is helpful.

  • The Biggest Story Bible Storybook by Kevin DeYoung [Elementary]- This is the book our kids Christmas program was based on.

  • The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones [Any age!]- If you have been around Faith very long, you know this is one of our favorites. It points kids to Jesus with every story.

DEVOTIONALS

  • Songs to Make Your Heart Sing by Sally Lloyd-Jones [Elementary]- Short devotionals that are great for mornings before school or at night before bed. We read from this every morning in the car on the way to school for years and really enjoyed it.

  • Indescribable by Louie Giglio [Elementary]- 100 Devotions about God and science

  • The Best News Ever by Chris Morphew [Middle School]- Walks through the Gospel of Mark.

  • Turn Upside Down series by various authors [Middle & High School]- We gave these to students for Christmas 3 or 4 years ago and they are probably the most popular book we’ve given out. There are 4 in the series looking at different Bible characters.

  • Better Than Life by Caroline Saunders [Middle & High School Girls]- A study of Psalm and the idea of loving to pursue God through his word.

  • Alongside Jesus by Drew Hill [Middle and High School]

  • Between Us Girls by Trish Donohue [Elementary, Middle School]- A discussion-based devotional for moms to do with their daughters.

  • Between Us Guys by Joel Fitzpatrick [Elementary, Middle School]- A discussion-based devotional for dads to do with their sons.

BIBLE STORY AND THEOLOGY BOOKS

  • The Beginner’s Gospel Story Bible series [Boardbooks for Preschool and Younger Elementary]

  • Very Best Bible Stories Series by various authors [Preschool]- These Bible stories get kids involved in the story with actions that help them enjoy the story and participate in the action.

  • The Radical Book for Kids by Champ Thornton [Older Elementary, Middle School]- This is a fun book that allows kids to explore different topics from Scripture, church history, and more. My boys loved to read this on their own or together book when they were younger.

  • God Made Me Series by Various Authors [Elementary]- This is a great series that covers a lot of different important topics which can be hard for kids to grasp. They explain the topics well and have a parents guide in the back with Scriptures, discussion questions, and ideas for keeping these conversations going.

  • Tales That Tell the Truth series by various authors [Preschool, Elementary]- This series covers great Bible stories in an engaging way. The art and the creative way they present the stories really help kids grasp the point and see Jesus. They have board book versions for preschool kids and longer versions for elementary kids.

  • Big Questions series by Chris Morphew [Middle & High School]- This is an easy for students to read series answering some of the most important questions they are asking, including Who Am I and Why Do I Matter?, Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen?, and What Happens When We Die?.

BOOKS

  • Just Because Your Mine by Sally Lloyd-Jones [Preschool]

  • Do Great Things for God series [Older Preschool and Elementary]- I have enjoyed reading these books with Randy. Each one is a different missionary or person from church history including Fanny Crosby, Corrie Ten Boom, Betsey Stockton and more.

  • Wherever You Go, I Want You to Know by Melissa Kruger [Elementary]- A more Biblical take on the classic Dr. Seuss book Oh, the Places You’ll Go.

  • Everyone A Child Should Know by Clare Heath-Whyte [Older Preschool, Elementary]- We have been trying to read from this at the dinner table sometimes and they are short biographies on people you’ve heard of from church history, and some you haven’t.

  • What Every Child Should Know About Prayer by Nancy Guthrie [Elementary]

  • The Rwendigo Tales by JA Myhre [Older Elementary, Middle & High School]- Fiction series written by a mom on the mission field. Emily enjoyed this series when she was in middle school.

  • 12 Ways Your Phone is Changing You by Tony Reinke [Middle & High School]- This is a great book to help all of us think through the impact our phone use has on us.

  • This Changes Everything by Jaquelle Crowe [Middle & High School]- Written by a teenager about the ways the gospel changes life as a teenager.

  • My Tech-Wise Life by Amy and Andy Crouch [Middle & High School]- This is a book we did a series on not too long ago but if your teenager uses a phone or spends a lot of time on the computer, this book has some great ways to think through creating boundaries and using technology for God’s glory and our own good. Written by a college student with insight from her dad who has written a lot about technology use.

  • Everything Sad is Untrue: a true story by Daniel Nayeri [Middle & High School]- This is one of the best books I read all year. It’s the true story of a boy having to flee his home in Iran with his mother because she became a Christian and his experience coming to America. Written from his perspective as a kid, it is a beautiful story and insightful book.

For the Burdened Parent of College-Aged and Young Adult Children

I know the title says this is for parents of college-aged kids and older but it’s really for every parent. We all struggle with worry and uncertainty over what is going on in the hearts and lives of our kids. And we all have hopes and desires for our kids that we have no ability to actually produce in their lives. BUT…we have something better. We have a God who can produce his good plan for the life and is actively at work to do it right now because he loves our kids even more than we do. So be encouraged by the reminders of God’s promises to us in this article and find rest for your worried-about-your-kids heart in a savior, Jesus, who loves you too!

25 Tiny Ways to Welcome Kids at Church

It can be so easy to overlook the youngest ones in our church family. We focus on adults and older kids and assume the younger kids will come because they have to. But we have the opportunity, from an early age, to communicate to the kids in our church that God loves them, they belong in our church, and we are excited to have them as a part of our church family. This kind of foundation- a sense of belonging in God’s church- points them to Jesus and communicates his love for them. This is a great list of little practices that can go a long way in the life of our church and in their little hearts.

Protecting Your Teenagers Online

This is an incredibly helpful article, both in the way he frames the importance of protecting your kids online and in the practical ways we can do it. His 3 levels of protection are a great way to think about what’s most important in this process. This is an area I feel like we’ve been struggling with in our home recently and this was a helpful guide for me to start thinking about what to change and how. In the same way that you will probably buy a protection plan for whatever technology you give your kids this Christmas to protect it from physical damage, consider what you are doing to protect their hearts from the damage that can be caused by that same technology.

The Common Rule Advent Edition

There are some great ideas and conversation starters on this advent resource page. We used A Christmas Morning Liturgy last year before we opened presents and it was a lot of fun. There are also ideas for hosting Christmas parties for your neighbors, personal advent practices, and more.

It’s not Christmas without this hilarious video of kids telling the Christmas story. We quote this video in our family all year long and it’s time to start watching it again. Enjoy!

Dear Parents…Are You Putting Faith First?

In my experience, and what I have seen in many families, faith doesn’t move down the priority list on purpose. This is one of those things where small decisions along the way lead us to a place where, all of a sudden, we look back and realize the driving principles of our family are far from what we wanted. Schedules, and activities, and tiredness allow Jesus to slip from the center of our family life. He makes a number of great points in here. I really like what he says about forcing our kids to rest. I am in a season of this with some of my kids right now. They do not naturally grasp the importance of rest. They would rather continue to do stuff until they are exhausted and worn out. God knows this is our tendency which is why he emphasizes the importance of rest And we need to help our kids see the value of it as well.

Teaching Our Children to Have Thankful Hearts

I know thankfulness is one of the character traits I most want my kids to develop. I want them to have a sense of gratitude towards God for all they have been given. I think this attitude can impact so many other areas of their heart and lives. If I’m honest, I need God to make me more thankful too because I often take the grace and kindness I’ve been shown for granted. This article reminds us of the importance of letting every good thing we have lead us to the praise of our God who has given those good things. And there are some practical ways we can lead our kids to thankfulness and praise every day.

30 Thankful Prayers

Besides the ideas above, here are 30 Scriptures you can use to guide you and your kids in prayers of thankfulness.

You Are Not Special. You Are Loved.

This article is a great description of what many of our kids are struggling with- how do I distinguish myself so that people will notice me and my worth will be proven. Today, kids have so many platforms to make the case for their value. We know that worth found that way is fleeting. This is why we long for our kids to know they are so loved by God that he bought them with a price, the life of his son Jesus. This has some great insight into what is at the root of much of kids’ anxiety these days, and the antidote that can bring rest to their souls [and ours as well!].

PODCAST: Teach Your Kids to Love the Local Church

This is a talk from a conference this past summer that some women from our church attended. She does a great job of laying out the importance of our kids loving Jesus’ church. Both in the motivation for our kids loving church, and in practical ways to cultivate it, there is a lot of wisdom in this talk.
